Vetronix Sales Corp. and Jaime Lazarus Test Vehicle Emissions at
Clean Cities Alternative Fuel Days
06/07/03 -- Jaime Lazarus the Factory Representative
for Vetronix Sales Corp (http://www.vetronix.com
& JLazarus@vetronix.com)
challenged folks that attended the Clean Cities AVF days in Cocoa, FL to
have their vehicles emissions tested. Jaime
stressed that the best mechanics can't assure a properly tuned vehicle
without such testing. He offered a comprehensive list he'd
assembled that correlated elevated readings to common causes. "With
our equipment, not only can you insure a properly running vehicle, you can
narrow the diagnosis prior to any intervention. Vetronix not only
protects the environment, but also saves time and money".
Flashing a grin, Jamie held up a wicked looking stainless steel
flexible rod about 18" long. On one end resided a holed, pointed tip.
On the other end a rubber hose traveled back to a high tech box. "If
you'll snake this sensor up your tailpipe... the one on your car..., I'll
take some samples. If you're real clean, there's an award for the
cleanest vehicle driven to the show."
Things were progressing smoothly and he tested several cars, trucks and
vans. As the queue dwindled, he occasionally looked up. When
HUGR added the CleanCut48 to the line he laughed. Jaime was not
expecting a lawnmower.
Amused but unperturbed he quickly offered instructions and the probe
was positioned in the exhaust port of the CleanCut. "We'll start
testing at idle; then I'll have you push it up to approximately 2000 rpm and we'll
sample again." The results:
| CleanCut48 |
NOX ppm |
CO% |
HC ppm |
CO2% |
O2% |
| Idle |
83 |
.02 |
0 ppm |
1.3 |
19.0 |
| 2000(approx.) |
46 |
.02 |
1 ppm |
2.2 |
17.7 |
Jaime, well-versed in emissions
testing, offered: "The extra O2 usually means incomplete combustion in a
gas-powered internal combustion engine but in a Diesel having much more
than a 14.7:1 air/fuel ratio, plus the added oxygen in the fuel one should
expect to see such high O2 volume in the exhaust."
Jaime also warned that although the HC readings were encouraging, NOX
remains a major contributor to air pollution.
Although he'd never before tested a mower, Jaime stated the most of the
automobiles he sampled did not perform as well as the CleanCut.
Considering the reputation of such equipment he mentioned that the
performance was a definite improvement.
